6th Draft: Refining the text and collecting staging ideas

After refining the text I could finally starting to think about how I want to stage it.

Major Changes:

  • Editing Text

  • Staging ideas

#1: First Staging Ideas

Zois wanted me to get it on it's feet with a fitting costume to see how it works and how long it is. I made minor text edits to ease the language.

# Projections

I had just seen the movie Inside Out and I was intrigued because my text is thoughts. so why would I not be in the characters head instead of the character. So I thought about using projections to indicate what the character sees and me being the internal response to it.

# Costume

I thought about the dissonance between how people present themselves and what actually happens in their minds. Well I can only speak for myself and I know that what I show is not always what I feel, even though I try to be as real as I can.

I had a conversation about the monologue with my girlfriend and she said something which only makes sense in german, I will translate it anyway: "wow, you intellectually really pull your pants down."

I thought about that being in underwear is something we usually don't do in front of others. The combination of the question how I could show the dissonance between what I want to show and what I want people to see brought me to the idea of presenting myself in a suit, but without any pants.

# Props

Zois told me he only wanted me to use props that mean something. I wanted to hand a rose to the audience to make the sense of kindness and that we are all involved in it clear. The difficulty was going around the covid rules, that's why I wasn't allowed to do it in the end. But I still kept the rose.

#2: Rehearsals

I slightly adjusted the script so the language was easier for me and I changed the ending. I also presented my costume idea and the idea with the rose.

This is the Script I used:

#3: Decisions And Edits

Zois had me throw down the jacket during the dance in the beginning. But he didn't want me to just leave it on the floor and not use it again because then it would be a prop without meaning. So that was one task for the next draft.

We agreed on leaving the projections because it would distract from my performance and it wouldn't help the piece enough in correlation to the work it would have needed.

During the rehearsal we made the following edits and defined the mood changes.

#4: The Draft

I also felt that the Title (Free (Will) Free) was not accurate anymore and too complicated anyway. And the main message is that we should start to change the world by changing our own behaviour. So the easiest, shortest and most interesting title I could think of was DIY. I thought it would attract the eye standing next to other titles in the program.

This is the clean draft after that iteration:
